Freezing rain is wreaking havoc on the roads and sidewalks of Cariboo Chilcotin.
It rained most of the day on Wednesday January 12 at Williams Lake and Environment Canada is forecasting periods of rain overnight through Thursday morning January 13 with an overnight high of 3°C.
The wet weather started Tuesday evening and caused the cancellation of school buses in Williams Lake on Wednesday.
DriveBC issued a travel advisory for Highway 20 for the entire 454 km stretch from Williams Lake to Bella Coola on Wednesday. Travel is not recommended due to freezing rain.
Highway 20 is also closed in both directions due to a vehicle incident between Young Road and Harvey Road, two miles west of Alexis Creek, Wednesday afternoon.
Motorists are warned that Highway 20 could close at any time on the hill between Lake Anahim and Bella Coola due to increased avalanche risk from snowfall and weather conditions.
Travel is also advised against on Route 97 between Butler Road and Pinnell Road, 30 km south of 150 Mile House to eight km north of Wildwood, Wednesday afternoon due to freezing rain.
At 93 miles, a travel advisory is in effect for Highway 97 between Yale Road and Ainsworth Road for 14.5 km due to icing conditions. Travel is not recommended at this time, DriveBC notes.
Williams Lake area residents have taken to social media to warn others of slippery conditions and vehicles in ditches in neighborhoods including Chimney Lake, 150 Mile House, Fox Mountain, South Lakeside, Horsefly Road and the side streets of Dog Creek Road.
