Kyoto Launches Online Crowding Forecast Map in English and Chinese to Prevent Overtourism

KYOTO — The Kyoto Municipal Government and the Kyoto City Tourism Association have launched an online map in English and Chinese that shows the forecast for tourist spots in Japan’s former capital.

Along with multilingual versions of the “Kyoto Travel Congestion Forecast” map, the city and tourism association began beefing up messaging for inbound travelers before the Japanese government significantly eased pandemic border restrictions on October 11. . They promote ease of travel in Kyoto while preventing “overtourism” or overwhelming numbers of visitors to certain places.

The map allows users to view five-level congestion forecasts every hour up to two months in advance for seven popular tourist areas, including “Gion and Kiyomizu”, “Saga-arashiyama” and “Fushimi”. The predictions are based on analysis of past location data from smartphones and promise to make it easier for visitors to see major sights while avoiding periods of congestion. The Japanese version of the service was launched in November 2019.

In addition, “Hanamikoji” street in the Gion and Kiyomizu area has been added to the list of live camera feeds of the crowd in seven areas. The city’s official website for foreign tourists also released a “Code of Conduct for Sustainable Tourism in Kyoto” and Japan’s anti-coronavirus measures.
