Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has shared festive cheer for the people of West Malaysia by announcing free and discounted tolls on 30 highways in conjunction with the upcoming Raya Festival. If you’re planning a road trip to take advantage of free tolls on the North-South Highway, here are four things you need to know.
Free toll on PLUS available for four days only
As announced by the Prime Minister, the free toll offer is applicable for the following weekend period:
- 12:01 a.m. (Saturday) April 30 to 11:59 p.m. (Sunday) May 1
- 12:01 a.m. (Saturday) May 7 to 11:59 p.m. (Sunday) May 8
To benefit from the free toll, you must enter and leave during the free toll period.
TNG card, SmartTAG and RFID still required
Although tolls are offered free of charge during the promotion period, highway users are still required to cross the toll lanes as normal as the barriers are still operational. This means you will still need to use your Touch ‘n Go card or use your SmartTAG device and RFID tag as normal. As always, you must enter and exit the North-South Highway using the same payment method. If you enter via RFID, you must also exit via RFID.
If you cannot get off the highway during the promotional period, you will have to pay the toll. For added security, it is always recommended to maintain sufficient credit on the Touch ‘n Go card or eWallet balance if using RFID.
Exit the nearest toll before the deadline to take advantage of the free toll
As mentioned earlier, you must enter and exit the PLUS Highway toll plaza during the promotional period in order to take advantage of the RM0 toll charge. This means that if you exit after the deadline, you will have to pay the full toll depending on your class of vehicle.
If you cannot reach your last toll station in time due to traffic jams or delays, you can exit at the nearest toll station before 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the promotion and get back on the highway. At least the first half of your journey is free and you will only pay tolls for the remaining distance on the highway. Likewise, if you entered the freeway before the start of the promotion at 12:01 a.m., you can also exit the freeway after midnight and re-enter again to take advantage of the free toll for the rest of your trip.
For a smoother journey, it’s best to use navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps to get updates on what’s to come.
Follow the travel time notice for a smoother journey
Prior to the Prime Minister’s announcement, PLUS expects over 2 million vehicles on the North-South Highway for Raya, an increase of 25%. With the free toll offer it looks like there will be more vehicles on the road and it is always recommended to follow the Travel Time Advisory published by PLUS.
If you are returning to your hometown between April 29 and May 2, it is recommended that you start your trip before 10:00 a.m. if you are traveling to Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak (North) and Johor. If you are heading to other states, it is best to start your trip after 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile, for those returning to Klang Valley between May 5 and May 9, it is recommended that you start your trip before 9:00 AM, regardless of where you start your trip.
To provide additional assistance to expressway users, PLUS is deploying additional staff to all of its 1,100 lanes across 94 toll booths during the Raya holiday season. They will be posted to assist with toll transaction complications to minimize potential congestion at toll plazas.
As always, drive carefully and follow SOPs if going through R&R areas.
