ADOT: Weekend freeway travel advisory for Phoenix area

Freeway improvement work will require the closure of a section of Interstate 10 eastbound between US 60 and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in the East Valley this weekend, from August 26-29, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).

A section of the westbound 202 Loop (Santan Freeway) in the Gilbert area is also expected to be closed. Drivers should plan their trip, allow for extra time and check alternate routes while the following scheduled weekend freeway restrictions are in place along Phoenix area freeways:

  • I-10 eastbound closed between US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) from 10 p.m. Friday, August 26 to 10 p.m. Saturday, August 27 for paving, installation of signs and other work as part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. The westbound US 60 ramp to eastbound I-10 is closed. The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Broadway Road is closed. The eastbound I-10 HOV ramp to eastbound US 60 and the westbound US 60 HOV ramp to westbound I-10 are also closed. Detour: Alternate routes include using Loop 202 eastbound (Red Mountain Highway) or US 60 eastbound to Loop 101 southbound (Price Highway) and Loop 202 westbound (Highway Santan) to reach I-10 eastbound past the closure. West Valley drivers may consider using the southbound 202 Loop (South Mountain Freeway) to reach eastbound I-10 near Chandler Boulevard (beyond the closure). Note: Eastbound I-10 is reduced to two lanes near Warner Road from 10 p.m. Saturday, August 27 to 4 a.m. Monday, August 29 for paving. Eastbound I-10 exit and on-ramps at Warner Road closed. Note: Westbound I-10 is reduced to two lanes between Southern Avenue and Broadway Road from 10 p.m. Friday, August 26 to 4 a.m. Monday, August 29 for bridge work. Westbound I-10 also narrowed to two lanes near Baseline Road from 10 p.m. Saturday, August 27 to 4 a.m. Monday, August 29 for concrete work. The westbound I-10 exit ramp at Baseline Road is closed.

  • Westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) closed between Val Vista Drive and Gilbert Road in the Southeast Valley from 9 p.m. Friday, August 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 29 for lane marking and other work on the Lindsay Road interchange project. The westbound 202 Loop on-ramps at Santan Village Parkway and Williams Field Road are closed. Detour: Consider exiting before closing and using local roads, including Westbound Williams Field or Germann roads.

  • Eastbound I-10 is reduced to one lane between Miller Road and Verrado Way in Buckeye from 9 p.m. Friday, August 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 29 for the widening project. Detour: Allow extra travel time and be prepared to slow down and merge safely as you approach and pass through all work areas.

  • The State Route 51 northbound and southbound Northern Avenue off-ramps are closed from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 27 for the City of Phoenix paving project. Expect occasional lane restrictions on Northern Avenue (in either direction) near SR 51. Detour: Consider leaving SR 51 westbound to Glendale Avenue and using northbound 16th Street to reach Northern Ave.

ADOT plans and constructs new freeways, additional lanes, and other improvements in the Phoenix area as part of the regional transportation plan for the Maricopa County area. The projects are funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.

Real-time road conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov and by calling 511.
